Backcountry Skiing
Jackson Hole and the Tetons are known for its immense available backcountry skiing terrain - the largest in the lower 48 states! Day and overnight backcountry ski trips for all levels of skiers are offered by professional tour guides.
With so many mountains it can be hard to decide where to go! Some local favorite backcountry ski areas are:
-
Teton Pass - It's name reflects its location. This skiing is between the Town of Jackson and Idaho that is accessible by the highway pass, Interstate 22. Some skiers and snowboarders drive to the top of 'The Pass' and ski to the bottom, having left a second car to drive them back to the top. Others park in any of the parking areas and tour from there. The area is expansive.
-
Grand Teton National Park - With much of Grand Teton being closed in the winter, skiing in 'The Park' may feel like you have the entire place to yourself. There is also an immense amount of terrain. However, you must work to get to it because many of the roads are closed. It requires skinning across frozen Jackson Lake in many cases.
- Togwotee Pass - Also, far less traveled than Teton Pass, Togwotee Pass is located about 50 miles north east of Jackson between there and Dubois, Wyoming. Historically enjoyed by snowmobilers, it's just recently becoming a mecca for skiers and snowboarders.
- Jackson Hole Mountain Resort - Though famous as an in-bounds ski resort, it provides access to amazing backcountry skiing. What's great is you can hire a ski guide from the resort to show you the ropes.
Please remember that avalanches occur in the backcountry. We strongly encourage you to use caution and to take an Avalanche Awareness course, even if you are going with a ski guide.
